Super yachts at night

Whilst Brendan drove me back to my place on the other side of the bay I couldn’t resist trying to get a few photos of the Maltese Falcon that was moored up next to us in Falmouth Harbour.

The rib was bobbing up and down too much to get decent images, but I actually quite like the blurred effect that did come out. These yachts are so enormous and quiet at the night, that when you drive up close to them, with their flood lights creating pools of light in the water, you feel like you are approaching a space ship rather than a boat.

Large tarpon fish are attracted by the light and swim silhouetted against the hull. It’s beautiful, yet eerie at the same time, and definitely my favourite part of the drive home.

Whilst I was in Antigua I was lucky enough to get to kite at one of the most pristine bays I’ve ever seen.

Lois and Brendan had been to Green Island before, which you access by rib, and they shared this gem of a spot with me. We were so lucky to be nearly the only people there, with literally only 5 other kiters out, it felt like our bay.

Kiting is simply the best thing I’ve tried in a long time. It’s everything, from the moment you dip the kite and feel the surge of power that pulls you out of the water on to your feet, to skimming over the waves feeling like you are going so fast that surely this must end in disaster, and the amazing cart-wheeling, head-over-heels crashes that do come when I try to transition back the other way :)

I’ve only been kiting a number of weeks, and I have so far to go before I can even think of myself as a kite boarder, but I know already that this is a bug that has bitten me hard. No matter how big the smash, I just want to put the board back on my feet and get up again.

…These are a few of my favourite things…

I’ve done a fair amount of independent travel in the past couple of years. Getting to travel with friends again reminds me why shared experiences trump the solo adventure every time.
